MEMPHIS, TN – June 18, 2025 – Varsity Spirit, a division of Varsity Brands and a global leader in cheerleading, dance team and band apparel, camps and competitions, and yearbook, proudly announces the official launch of the Pro Cheer League — the first professional cheerleading league created exclusively for elite athletes aged 18 and older.

This historic launch marks a transformative moment for the sport of cheerleading in delivering a long-overdue career-level platform for athletes to continue their careers beyond high school and college. The Pro Cheer League empowers elite performers to compete at the highest level with advanced training, national exposure, and competitive compensation, while fostering hometown pride and fan connection as cheer continues to gain global traction.

“Cheerleading popularity has exploded over the last decade and has become part of the Olympic movement in recent years,” said Bill Seely, President of Varsity Spirit. “The Pro Cheer League represents a bold step forward, not just for the athletes, but for the future of our sport. We’re creating a Pro league to provide the ultimate opportunity for the most elite athletes from around the world. This will elevate cheer to its rightful place in sports by giving these remarkable athletes the visibility, opportunities and recognition they’ve earned.”

The inaugural season of the Pro Cheer League will debut in 2026 with four founding teams based in Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, and San Diego. Each team will be comprised of 30 of the most talented cheerleaders in the country, selected through a competitive selection process that will be held this fall led by renowned team managers, many of whom have trained the nation’s top athletes. Pro Cheer League team members will receive elite training and part-time compensation, including wages, travel and lodging, uniforms, bonuses, and prize incentives.

This first season begins in January 2026, with five high-energy events in Indianapolis, Houston, Atlanta, Anaheim, and Nashville. Each match consists of three rounds of competition, with rounds one and two featuring cheerleading skills, including stunts, basket tosses, and tumbling in head-to-head, bracket-style rounds. The final round will be a creative routine set to music, highlighting choreography, creativity, athleticism and showmanship.

Pro Cheer League staff and coaches will undergo comprehensive training, while certified oversight teams will ensure compliance with established standards from USA Cheer and
will maintain a governance body inside the league to administer league rules. The Pro Cheer League is also building for the future, with plans to add more teams, expand nationally and create even more access points for athletes and fans alike.

Between the three events, the championships collectively hosted over 45,000 athletes and coaches and more than 2,300 teams from 18 countries and over 78,000 spectators.

Last week, college cheerleading and dance teams traveled from across the U.S. to compete beside the ocean at the historic Daytona Beach Bandshell in hopes of winning a national title. More than 10,000 participants from over 470 college teams across the country competed for the National Champion title. Cheerleading teams are judged on their stunting and tumbling skills, crowd-leading ability, and overall performance, while the dance teams are judged on choreography, technique, execution, and overall effect. One of the most exciting evolutions of the championship has been the continued growth of the College Game Day divisions, which allow cheer and dance teams to compete alongside their school’s band. Since its debut in 2017, this division has become a fan favorite and is a powerful showcase of collegiate pride and school spirit.

For the past three decades, Dallas has proudly been the home of the NCA All-Star National Championship, produced by NCA, a Varsity Spirit brand. This prestigious event brings together top athletes from across the nation to showcase their talent, dedication, and passion on the national stage.

The championship kicked off Friday night with “Battle in the Arena,” featuring exhibition performances from top League 6 teams and a production of The League Live Show. This segment offered the audience an inside look at how League 6 teams are ranked on The League leaderboard based on their scoring totals. For the second year in a row, athletes in the CheerABILITIES division showcased their teamwork and outstanding performances, competing in one of three categories: Exhibition, Novice, and Elite.

NCA also presented the “Go Be Great” award to Memphis Pride Cheer from Memphis, Tennessee for their work volunteering and raising funds for local nonprofits. The Go Be Great Foundation celebrates difference-makers and overcomers, those who serve with kindness and selflessness while sharing their gifts, talents and opportunities with others. It encourages perseverance, leadership and community.

The NCA All-Star National Championship was the first of its kind in 1995, created to provide a standalone all star event in which cheerleaders could be recognized for their skills, athleticism, entertainment and talent. For 30 years, the NCA All-Star National Championship has been held in Dallas, Texas. With the upcoming revitalization at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, the NCA All-Star National Championship will be moving to Houston, Texas, through 2028.

The CHEERSPORT National All Star Cheerleading Championship, produced by Varsity All-Star hosted over 60,000 spectators and athletes representing over 1,400 teams at the event in downtown Atlanta, making it the largest event in it’s history.

CHEERSPORT’s Friday Night Live is a special event that takes place the Friday leading into the CHEERSPORT National All Star Cheerleading Championship where selected teams come together to showcase their incredible routines for a great cause.

Before heading to compete in Atlanta, teams fundraised for St. Jude and spread awareness through their team’s social media accounts.

The top fundraising teams for Friday Night Live 2025 were:

1. Cheer Express – Miss Silver raising $54,843
2. Maine Stars – raising $39,275
3. University Cheer Force – raising $20,628
4. Mac’s All Star Cheer – raising $18,393
5. Maryland Twisters – raising $15,343.50

CHEERSPORT has been teaming up with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital since 2015 where athletes, coaches, and fans raise money to support the mission of St. Jude.  Since then, Friday Night Live has raised over $1.4 million for St. Jude.

For the second year in a row, Friday Night Live teamed up with The League, bringing a live broadcast straight from the event to a sold-out crowd of 5,000 spectators, with more than 10,000 viewers tuning in on Varsity TV.

CHEERSPORT crowned 228 Division Champions and awarded 10 Paid and 20 At-Large Bids to the Cheerleading World Championship. The event also featured enhanced coverage on Varsity TV, delivering an ESPN-style broadcast on both Saturday and Sunday that showcased the nation’s top Level 6 teams. This production included live commentary, routine breakdowns, interviews, and more, providing an in-depth and engaging experience for cheerleading fans everywhere.

Over 75 Students and Advisors Gain Hands-On Journalism and Media Experience at Inaugural Event

MEMPHIS, TN, February 13, 2025 – Varsity Spirit – a division of Varsity Brands and a global leader in cheerleading, dance team and band apparel, camps and competitions, and yearbook – proudly launched its inaugural Press Pass Academy through  Varsity Yearbook. Press Pass Academy, an exclusive hands-on journalism and media experience for high school students, took place over two weekends at the National Dance Team Championship (NDTC) and the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC). More than 75 students and advisors participated in the inaugural program, gaining behind-the-scenes and front-row access to one of the biggest stages in school spirit.

Press Pass Academy provides yearbook students and advisers with a unique opportunity to travel with their school’s cheer squad, dance team, or band to cover the national competition at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at The Walt Disney World® Resort. Students gain front-row access to document their school’s journey on the national stage, conduct interviews with athletes and coaches, and capture moments for their school as true working journalists. Students also had the opportunity to shadow professional video production teams and receive a behind-the-scenes tour of ESPN’s media operations at the event.

The Game Day Live and Pep Band divisions celebrate the authentic energy and spirit of the sideline experience, showcasing the synergy between cheerleaders, dancers, and marching bands in a high-energy, game-day atmosphere. Competing teams performed in front of packed crowds, bringing the stadium experience to life with precision, enthusiasm, and school pride.

New to these events, the Pep Band Division also crowned its first champions. The debut of this division marks a significant milestone in further recognizing the vital role pep bands play in creating an unforgettable game-day experience, further uniting performers, musicians, and fans in a shared celebration of school pride.

Game Day Live Champions:

Junior Game Day Live (NHSCC: Spring Station Middle School

Varsity Game Day Live (NHSCC): Independence High School

Varsity Game Day Live (NDTC): Thompson High School

Pep Band Division Champions:

Independence High School – NHSCC

Burncoat High School – NDTC

Next year, bands will have the opportunity to compete at the National School Band Championship (NSBC), which will be part of the National School Spirit Championships across two weekends – DI & DII, based on school size. These unique performance opportunities give bands the chance to shine in the spotlight, in a standalone Pep Band Division, and collaborate with their cheer and dance programs.
